Mindfulness & Metacognition

Up to 95% of what we do is subconscious. Think about it – you don’t think about how to drive, how to tie your shoes, or how to brush your teeth. There was a time in your life when these simple tasks seemed impossible – or at least took all your concentration. Starting new habits, routines and behaviors happen at the conscious level, meaning we have to think about the way we think – metacognition– and be aware of how our thoughts and emotions are affecting our behaviors – mindfulness.

Our approach to teaching metacognition skills is focused on helping clients understand and manage their own thinking processes. This means teaching them how to be more aware of their own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and how to use that awareness to make more intentional and effective decisions.

To start, we typically begin by discussing what metacognition is and why it’s important. We talk about how it involves thinking about thinking, and how it can help them become more self-aware and better problem-solvers. Then, we help clients identify specific areas where they struggle with metacognition, such as difficulty focusing, planning, or self-monitoring.

Once we’ve identified these areas, our coaches work with clients to develop strategies that will help them improve their metacognition skills. For example, if a client struggles with focus, we might work on techniques for improving their attention span, such as mindfulness or visualization exercises. If a client has difficulty planning, we might work on breaking down tasks into smaller steps or using visual aids like calendars or to-do lists.

Throughout the coaching process, we also help clients develop the ability to reflect on their own thinking processes. This means encouraging them to ask themselves questions like “What am I thinking?” or “How is this thought or feeling affecting me?” By doing this, my clients become more aware of their own thoughts and emotions, which in turn helps them to make more intentional decisions.

Overall, teaching metacognition and mindfulness skills is a process that requires patience, practice, and a willingness to explore one’s own thinking processes.

Our coaches are committed to helping clients develop the skills and strategies they need to become more effective learners and problem-solvers.
